The Lilac Rotarian
March 23, 2009
Volume Fifty Two, Number 3

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation have had to make important decisions in light of the current financial environment. At the January Trustees meeting, a decision was made to reduce the 2008-09 Matching Grant budget in order to conserve The Rotary Foundation's World Fund. As of 2 March, the Matching Grant budget has been fully committed, and the Trustees are unable to approve any additional grant applications.

As a result of the budget reductions, no new Matching Grant applications will be accepted in the 2008-09 Rotary year. New applications received by the Foundation will be returned to the sponsors without processing. Applications that were received by the Foundation before the commitment of the available budget will remain at the Foundation and can move forward for processing in the 2009-10 Rotary year. Humanitarian Grants staff are in the process of notifying the sponsors of these applications, and their district leadership, of these updates.

At their April meeting, the Trustees will evaluate the current financial situation and approve a budget for 2009-10. Detailed information about Matching Grant funding will be available after the meeting, and the Rotary International Web site will be updated with all pertinent information. Please visit www.rotary.org for further updates.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during these difficult financial times.

Honored Guests: On February 19th, I wasn't here, so no one took notes for me. On February 26th, no guests were present. On March 5th, there were no guests. (They couldn't find us, because we weren't at Casey's). On March 12th, Dan Coffey found us and was our guest for lunch. On March 19th, our guests were Bill Schaub from the Addison club and Hank Thiely from Michigan.

Fines and Happy Fines: On February 19th, no notes, no report. On February 26th, Brian started things off with pin fines from Mike F., Gary H., and Doc Arndt. Because they were sitting at the same table and each was wearing a blue and red shirt, the Sgt. thought that a political statement was being made by Dennis and Bob H. Brian caught Doc walking in late and Ralph should have stayed home, as he walked in after dessert. Bob M. and Bob W. were hit with two suspender wearers at the same table. Dan and Rick each paid a picture fine. Happy fines were paid by Brian as Lilac Bakery has finally opened, Maury was on his way to sunny Hawaii, Charlies oldest sister celebrated her b'day and Jeans' nephew won the 100m Butterfly over the weekend. On March 5th, the Sgt. caught Pat, Doc and Jim B. strolling in late. (Probably got lost). He caught Dan W. wearing Dan T's name badge, and fined Yvonne for pointing it out. Thanks for looking out for me Y. Dennis and Connie were caught at the same table. More political statements were made as Pat, Dennis and Greg were wearing blue at one table and at another table, Bob H., Jean and Jim B. were wearing red. On the happy fine side, Bob H was happy that when the DG called him for volunteers for the 12th and 13th, he was able to get enough to say yes. And Yvonne was happy that her son Brandon, in addition to getting accepted for his PhD in Barcelona was also accepted at Oxford in England. Hey! Brian's from jolly ol' England. What a choice, sunny Spain with beautiful Spanish women or England, home of warm beer and fog. On March 12th, the Sgt. was sick, so I took over and caught Art walking in late, Doc and Rich G. were fined for no pins. John B. announced that Jack had a pacemaker installed and he is doing fine. Maury was back from Hawaii and paid a disputed tan fine. Jean was glad that Rich could make it during tax time. Rich seconded that and paid up. Bob C. was happy that the last piece of steel was being put into place at the new Elmhurst Hospital. On March 19th, the Sgt. fined Greg and Marge for the two bankers at one table, two lawyers, Connie and Dennis. Bob H. wanted to thank all who volunteered at the P.E.T.S., Jean is glad that her mom's chemo is over and thanked everyone for their prayers. Greg was happy that his son-in-laws orders to Iraq were recinded.
