Reasons to Attend! Inspiring Plenary speakers and Entertainment
Pop icon Donny Osmond is the featured performer during the "Welcome
to Utah: Talents of Utah" segment of the Opening Plenary Session.
With forty years in show business, Donny Osmond has sold over 80
million albums, starred on Broadway in "Beauty and the Beast,"
and toured the U.S. in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat." In addition he has hosted TV game and variety shows
and authored a best-selling autobiography. Always the consummate
entertainer, he is currently appearing in Las Vegas from which he
is taking a break on Saturday to open the Rotary Convention.
Monday's plenary with the theme Rotary in Action offers an exciting
lineup of speakers: Youth Exchange student Jenny Horton from Australia,
now a WHO consultant in Pakistan, Ambassadorial scholars Tom Ristamaki
of Canada and the Honorable Francis Moloi, South African High Commissioner
to India will inspire you with stories of how Rotary has changed
their lives.
Tuesday's plenary session on the theme - The Rotary Foundation
- will feature keynote speaker William H. Gates, Sr., co-chair of
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, speaking on "The Role
of the Charitable Foundation in Today's World." Other speakers
include a Peace Scholar yet to be named.
Wednesday's theme - Rotary Opportunities for Service - will feature
Hyrum Smith, founder of Franklin Quest and currently a principal
in the Franklin Covey firm, who motivates individuals to gain better
control of their personal and professional lives through values-based
time and life management. Smith combines a gift for communication
with wit and enthusiasm to bring his audience face-to-face with
what matters most to them. Rounding out the session are three presentations
from the Rotary Resource Groups on Water (Colleen Boyle and Vikram
Sanghani), Literacy (Emine Yuzay - tentative), and Health and Hunger
(video).
March Board Meeting Highlights - On March 15th, the Board approved
a donation request from NEDSRA to fund the participant awards at
the Special Olympics Track and Field Meet on May 19th. The event
will be held at Glenbard East beginning at 9:30 and all Rotarians

Welcome To Our Speakers: On March 22nd, we were joined by Steve
Hyatt who provided an enthusiastic perspective of the early days
of railroads in Lombard. On March 29th, Ralph Schweppe dropped the
ball as he failed to provide a speaker. Ralph claims he was following
the lead of Gary Bird from March 8th. Bob Mertz was in control on
April 5th as he brought in Daily Herald reporter Michael Wamble.
In addition, he called all the members in advance to promote attendance
.as
a former postal employee my guess was that he'd send postcards.
There were plenty of speakers on April 12th as the Club hosted a
Business After Hours with the Chamber of Commerce.
Announcements: On March 15th, President Rick provided an update
of activities at the board meeting. On March 22nd, several photo
opportunities were completed with the help of Steve Spoden. On March
29th, Dennis McNicholas noted that George Goetschel will soon be
returning to Illinois. In a move of distinction, Bob Carter was
recognized as the most recent "Paul Harris Fellow". President
Rick, noting a pattern of missing speakers, updated the group on
the facilitators for the next three weeks. On, April 5th Dennis
McNicholas shared the good news that two of the wells in Haiti are
up and running. Kim Pede reminded the group about Business After
Hours on April 12th.
Fines & Happy Fines: On March 22nd, several ongoing offenders
paid dearly including Kathy Volpe and Ralph Schweppe for missing
pins. Jim Blanche, Mike Fugiel, Marge Topel and Jean Nolan were
cited for missing the board meeting last week. Doc Arndt was mysteriously
on time which really frustrated the Sergeant. Picture fines were
levied against the assets of Deb Allen, Steve Flint, John Nolan,
Jean Nolan, and Gary Bird. Mike Fugiel and Deb Allen an administrative
table fine while Sergeant Dan and guest Sandra Hill paid another
table fine for being elected officials. Bob McBride paid a fine
for walking in at the wrong time and Scott MacKay paid a fine for
a yet to be determined violation. Ralph Schweppe will be fined dearly
for a cell phone call he picked up right after lunch and before
the speaker. President Rick paid a happy fine for a nearly full
room and Brian Johnson was happy for a scholarly granddaughter.
Marge Topel was pleased (despite losing an appeal on a board meeting
absence) that her husband's eye surgery was successful despite the
surgeon's schedule. John Nolan was happy that Bob Mertz dressed
up for the occasion including a fish hook tie. Bob noted that the
tie cost $5 less than his first car which included a side view mirror.
On March 29th, the Sergeant had to work diligently as spring break
diminished the normal crowd. Kathy Volpe and Ralph Schweppe paid
up for missing pins and Jim Blanche paid up for an aging picture
fine. Ralph also added to the pot for his speaker snafu. The Sergeant
was happy that Jean Nolan is getting closer to celebrating parenthood
for the second time around. Two birthday celebrations (Byrne &
Schroeder) were tabled due to lack of attendance. Kathy Volpe and
Doc Arndt were late again on April 5th. Ray Byrne and Sergeant Dan
Tufano recently celebrated 50th birthdays. Table fines were again
excessive and included two (Byrne, Seagraves) chiefs, two (McNicholas,
Gessner) attorneys, two (Lichter, Fugiel) administrators, and two
(Johnson and Volpe) realtors. Bob Harris and Doc Ardnt were missing
membership hardware President Rick paid for stealing some birthday
thunder from Sergeant Dan. Chief Seagraves was really happy to pay
for grandson numero uno and Jean Nolan silently endorsed her husband
as a write-in candidate for the Library Board. Dennis McNicholas
related a short story about an 8'11" 22 lb. newborn
Honored Guests: The room was lively on March 22nd with a bevy of
guests including Sandra Hill, Admiral Frank Alston, and the lovely
Kay Whitacre. Mr. Alain, Mr. Karnatz and the young Mr. (Ron) Mertz
joined the tables on April 5th.
Object of Rotary - or Be Reminded: the first regular (Thursday)
meeting of every month is "Food or $5" as members will
have the choice of bringing a food item to help supply for the Food
Pantry or pay a $5 fine of to support First Things First. When a
speaker is not scheduled on the first Thursday of each month, the
time will be spent in quality fellowship and member to member interaction.
Birthday Celebrations: Recent and upcoming birthday celebrations
of note include:
Dan Tufano April 4th Kim Pede April 18th Marge Topel April 21st
Ed Reeder April 23rd
Art Karnatz April 30th
Weekly Raffle: March 22nd Bob Carter, with over $700 to gain, pulled
the Three of Spades instead of the elusive Six of Diamonds on February
15th while Peter O'Conner failed his table members by pulling the
Seven of Spades on February 22nd. The carry-over continues as Jean
Nolan, on behalf of her table, selected the Ace of Hearts on March
22nd. The same table is now fighting over a commemorative train
calendar that was a side part of the festivities. The Four-Way Test
might dictate that each table member get two months and 12 days
of the special calendar. Jean Nolan, on behalf of her table, took
the Eight of Spades out of contention on March 29th. On April 5th,
Kim Pede, on behalf of the middle table, was staring at over $800
when she took the Ace of Diamonds out of the deck.
