January Board Meeting Highlights - On January 18th, the Board approved a $350 donation to PADS. The Business After Hours will replace the regular lunch on April 5th while the Valentines Dinner will not be in place of lunch on February 14th. The board accepted the resignation of Cindy McDonald due to many lunchtime business commitments.

Birthday Basket Tradition – Don’t know, just ask!

Welcome To Our Speakers: On January 18th, Mike Fugiel provided a seminar on issues relating to the Entitlement Generation. Village President William Mueller stopped by on January 25th to provide his state of the Village address. He also made mention of the many philanthropic works of Dennis McNicholas. Dennis owned up to a fine for the compliment and humbly stated that it takes the entire Club to get things done. Marge Topel and Steve Flint provided a synopsis of the Object of Rotary on February 1st. John Brandon Brust provided a historical perspective of Illinois and the DuPage River area from 1776 through 1818 on February 8th.

Speaker Schedule: The following members and topics are on the weekly schedule:

Feb. 15 Rich Gallicchio TBA
Feb. 22 Dan Tufano Laura Taoma

Announcements: January 18th included updates on the Valentines Dinner at Praga and the upcoming Peck House Unveiling on February 6th. The board approved a $350 donation for PADS and it was reluctantly announced that Cindy McDonald has resigned from the Club. Festivities on January 25th started with Steve Spoden snapping some photo ops with representatives from SD #44, the Library and Glenbard East. Dennis McNicholas noted that Bill Shultz is extremely ill and that we should keep him and his family in our prayers. Gary Bird noted that a $150 gift certificate to Mr. Z’s was passed along to a needy family via the birthday fund. Bob Mertz presented a flag form the Branson Rotary Club that was sent over by Charlie Kundrot who visited the Club last month. President Rick will send a flag back to Branson. On February 8th, President Rick divulged a whisper of information regarding Larry Bouldin Day. Updates were also provided on the health of George Goetschel and the unfortunate passing of Bill Shultz. George is currently at 7927 State Road 52 #MB230, Hudson, Florida 34667-6783. Fun and Funds noted that 43 members and guests will be at Praga on February 12th for the Valentine’s festivities.

Fines & Happy Fines: On January 18th, Sergeant Dan provided his collection of recent newspaper photos that included (generally multiple and color enhanced fines) Doc Arndt, Steve Flint, Deb Allen, Jean Nolan and Dennis McNicholas. Late fines for the Board meeting were levied on Jim Blanche, Ray Byrne and Deb Allen. Those choosing not to show for that meeting included Greg Young, Bob McBride and Kim Pede. Bob Carter (1/2 late @ $.50) and Connie Gessner were late for lunch while Bob Carter, Jean Nolan, Kathy Volpe, Mike Fugiel and Greg Young paid up for missing pins. Charlie Richardson paid for being absent last week resulting in the lack of the weekly raffle. Bob Mertz was happy to be the only “non-Bob” at his table which caused the Sergeant to pay up for not noticing the obvious table fine. Mike Fugiel was happy that his mother got through surgery earlier in the morning. Sergeant Dan was off to a conference on January 25th and hence there were no fines. Mike Fugiel was also off to the same conference and Jean Nolan provided a complete set of the afternoon’s proceedings to the bulletin editor. On February 1st, the lack of a pin fine was paid by Kathy Volpe followed by late fees from Doc Arndt, Jean Nolan, Connie Gessner and Rich Gallicchio. President Rick paid a respect fine for arguing with Sergeant Dan. Table fines for the day included two Bobs, two lawyers, and a stretch on two architects. Jim Ilten paid a picture fine after being referred to as an architect of the Lord and then paid up a happy fine for the YMCA fundraising team. Brian Johnson was happy that Charlie bought him a drink for his birthday as well as a granddaughter on the honor roll. Steve Flint was happy that his daughter’s artwork was on display at Village Hall. Steve Flint and Doc Arndt paid late fines on February 8th while Connie Gessner paid a happy fine for being early. In a rare move of memory, Kathy Volpe had a pin and Kim Pede paid up for being guilty. Deb Allen was not around to pay a picture fine although it was noted that the same picture is quite the liability after missing the last two meetings. President Rick was happy that his daughter was invited to Portland, Oregon to officiate a volleyball tournament. Brian Johnson carried over his happiness from last week as another granddaughter nearly caught straight “A’s”. Ralph Schweppe was happy to catch the recent edition of “190 North”. Dan Tufano was happy to see the telecast of the Glenbard East-East Aurora basketball game while Mike Fugiel was happy to get the audio feed from Comcast on the second rebroadcast.

Honored Guests: The Guest spotlight was dimmed on January 18th and brightened up on January 25th as Annetta Wesselhoff (SD #44) and Laura Koening (GEHS) thanked the Club for the recent literacy donations. Hank Feely from Ludington, MI joined the group on February 1st. Other guests included Bruce Thompson from the Deicke Home, Rocco Melarkey from the Lombard Baseball League and Linda Shale from the Library; all there for photo ops on recent donations. All three were here to pick up checks and to pose for photo ops.

Object of Rotary – or Be Reminded: the first regular (Thursday) meeting of every month is “Food or $5” as members will have the choice of bringing a food item to help supply for the Food Pantry or pay a $5 fine to support First Things First. When a speaker is not scheduled on the first Thursday of each month, the time will be spent in quality fellowship and member to member interaction.

Birthday Celebrations: Recent and upcoming birthday celebrations of note include:

Dick Arnold January 26th Bob Harris February 15th
Dick Schroeder March 29th Ray Byrne March 30th Dan Tufano April 4th Kim Pede April 18th Marge Topel April 21st Ed Reeder April 23rd

Weekly Raffle: The quest for fame and fortune continued on January 18th as Bill Whitacre slowly approached the table with a great deal of concentration to take out the Seven of Diamonds. The elusive Six of Diamonds prevailed in that confrontation. Bob Harris had the lucky number on January 25th although it went awry as he pulled the Ace of Spades. Kathy Volpe pulled the Queen of Clubs on February 1st and backed it up (staring in the face of $670) by pulling the King of Diamonds on February 8th.
